Amethyst from Africa

The traditional source for the purple quartz known as amethyst is South America. Large deposits wwere found in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the 19th century. Amethyst occurs there in volcanic rocks in large geodes. Since the first discoveries amethyst has been found in a number of locations in Brazil, as well as across the border in Uruguay. Bolivia, famous for ametrine, also produces some amethyst.
